[BPSI] The Genius Tool + Bonus (Email 2 of 3) Da Vinci did it. Darwin did it. Beethoven did it. And so should you. If you start to use associations, you start to use images externally, you can join the pantheon of the great geniuses. Leonardo Da Vinci did it. Darwin did it. Beethoven did it. Every genius used image and associations. And a mind map is a process by which you can do that. It is a genius tool. ========================================== WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY ========================================== In the first email of this three episode series I introduced you the the simple steps of mind mapping. Why? I used mind mapping to pass the hardest exam that can be thrown at you in finance. Mind maps helped me pass my comprehensive exams for my Ph.D. in finance. I was a doctoral student with a daunting task. I was soon to be tested on every course I had studied in the University of South Carolina doctoral program in finance. Failing the exam a first time would add another year to process. Failing a second time results in expulsion from the program. The Ph.D. in finance is the most difficult degree in the social sciences. The high pay is such that people frequently come in with doctorates in physics or math. This just pushes the bar higher. We are the Navy Seals of applied mathematics. But only if we pass comps. The tension was palpable. ========================================== THE GENIUS TOOL ========================================== In failing I would not have been allowed to finish my Ph.D. If it weren't for mind mapping I would not be communicating with you today. I would not have passed comps. Let's continue covering the steps in mind mapping. Step Three: Use single words. One word is added to each branch. Why? If you have one word, that one word, with all its associations is free. If you put words together the mind map becomes more rigid. Take "stock trading" as a subject. Stock and trading are stuck together like glue. If "stock" is the central subject and trading is a first association there is more freedom to add associations to the word stock. Can you see the power of the one word? This gives you the freedom to radiate out. The single word per line gives you much more liberty. It gives you much more creativity. It gives you much more clarity. Step Four: Adjust line length to the relative strength of association between words. Closely associated words use shorter curvilinear lines. Step Five: Use different colors for different branches. We don't use color in notes traditionally. We are told not to in school. Multicolor assignments are hard for college professors like myself to grade. My red pen won't stick out. This makes it easier for me as the professor. But research shows that this may make learning harder for the student. A study at London University shows that people who use color in learning and imagination do better on tests than those who don't. Step Five In addition to words use images. Throughout a mind map there should be key images. Instead of writing the word "people" you can just draw three little stick figures. The image is a picture. A picture is worth a thousand words. Another important point about the use of images, the use of associations. Is that all the great geniuses did that. -Doc "Light Speed" Brown P.S.
